Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core. The plates act like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth's mantle. This strong outer layer is called the lithosphere, which is 100 km (60 miles) thick, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The lithosphere includes the crust and outer part of the mantle. Plate tectonics is the unifying theory of geology, said Nicholas van der Elst, a seismologist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York. Before plate tectonics, people had to come up with explanations of the geologic features in their region that were unique to that particular region," Van der Elst said. Plate tectonics unified all these descriptions and said that you should be able to describe all geologic features as though driven by the relative motion of these tectonic plates.

Today, science has shown that the surface of the Earth is in a constant state of change. We are able to observe and measure mountains rising and eroding, oceans expanding and shrinking, volcanoes erupting and earthquakes striking.

Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics: A Closer Look In 1912 Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) noticed that the continents fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. He proposed that the continents were once compressed into a single continent which he called Pangaea (meaning "all lands"), and over time they have drifted apart into their current distribution. He believed that Pangaea was intact until about 300 million years ago, when it began to break up and drift apart. JPG Wegener had four main pieces of evidence

Filed Under: Essays Tagged With: pacific ocean. In 1912, Alfred Wegener, a German scientist, was the first to notice this and develop the theory of plate tectonics. He noticed that the earth’s continents fit together almost like a jigsaw puzzle. This, combined with the fact that similar fossils and rock types are found on different continents separated by large bodies of water, helped him formulate his conjecture. When one plate is an oceanic mass and the other is a continental mass the oceanic plate moves beneath the other. This subduction produces a deep ocean trench and the edge of the lower plate can be determined by the examination of deep earthquakes. This collision quite often results in volcanoes, which occur at the edge of the upper plate, marking the plate distinctly. The last type of boundary is the conservative or transform margin.
