King of America is the tenth studio album by the British rock singer and songwriter Elvis Costello, released in 1986. Released in the United Kingdom as F-Beat ZL 70946, and in the United States as Columbia JC40173, some songs have a Country feel, reflecting his interest in Americana, whilst 'American Without Tears' deals with the experience of Irish immigrants in the US, and 'Little Palaces' references.
In early 1986, Costello would release the album King of America, billed to The Costello Show and made largely without the Attractions. The Attractions would play on only one track, as well as the non-LP B-side "Baby's Got A Brand New Hairdo", billed to "The Costello Show Featuring The Attractions". Later that same year Costello would reunite with The Attractions to record the album Blood & Chocolate, but this would prove to be the final Attractions release for several years.

The Attractions and Confederates . Lyrics for The Big Light by The Costello Show feat. Well I had a little feeling to have a big night And I woke up feeling small and not so brave and not quite right I had to face the who am I and where is she and what did I do. But worst of all I had to face the big light The big light came through my window and it opened up my eyelids And it snapped them up like roller blinds and told me things that I did I can't face another day and night of good ideas and complications And I'm thankful that I didn't open another bottle. More lyrics from the album.
King of America was the first album since My Aim Is True not to have been recorded with the Attractions. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, it was cut with American musicians, including guitarist James Burton and bassist Jerry Scheff (both longtime Elvis Presley sidemen). Onstage sat the Spectacular Spinning Songbook, a gaudy, game show–style wheel with concert selections determined by audience members’ spins. Costello thereafter parted ways with the Attractions and Columbia Records, his American label, signing with Warner Bros. Truly a solo artist for the first time since 1976, Costello thereafter worked at a more deliberate pace, issuing Spike in 1989 and Mighty Like a Rose two years later.
Elvis Costello and the Attractions November 23, 1986 Royalty Theatre, London, England BBC Radio Broadcast, excellent quality (source: BBC transcription discs) mp3 @ 320 kbps. Here is a great Elvis Costello show, back together with the Attractions (after ditching them for the King of America album) for a show featuring songs from their new album, Blood and Chocolate, in October 1986. Blood and Chocolate, was more in the rock vein after Elvis's various excursions into other styles, featuring a raw, aggressive, and decidedly unpolished sound. Thus, it rocks! This show is from a high quality.
