Orange Years is probably the Suns’s best record. Like all of their material, it’s made up largely of straight-ahead rock songs; unlike Mission of Burma, the Suns’s guitars tend to blare and not jangle, though both bands are anchored in drummer/vocalist Peter Prescott’s anthemic vocals. Newcomers to the group will be immediately struck by Orange Years‘s opener Jak, clearly one of the best blastoffs of the ‘80s. The album grew, as Beam says, out of a determination and a willingness to work together. After we made, that time we spent together promoting it, and just sort of playing together for so long, formed really strong bonds-familial bonds-and we just really enjoy each other’s company.

Unfortunately, even the outstanding remastering job by Bob Weston (who ended up joining the Suns after their second album) can only do so much to bring life to a low-budget recording. Prescott's drums in particular sound a bit muddy throughout. On the other hand, the bonus tracks are real treats.

Consumer Guide Album. Volcano Suns: The Bright Orange Years First side's got everything an insatiable Mission of Burma (or Hüsker Dü) fan could ask except Richard Harte's production, which might do justice to the band's command of detail. In fact, it makes me wish MOB had let drummer-vocalist Peter Prescott, who does most of the songwriting here, do most of the songwriting there as well. Second side's more clamorous, which these days is just another way of saying conventional.
