The album featured prominent session musicians John Reynolds on drums, former Adam and the Ants and Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist Marco Pirroni, former Japan guitarist Rob Dean and Mike Clowes from Friction Groove on keyboards. The first single "Troy" peaked at in The Netherlands and in Belgium. The second single was "Mandinka", the video for which was shown heavily after debuting on MTV's 120 Minutes. The single was a mainstream Pop hit in the UK, peaking at in the singles chart, as well as in her native Ireland.

Sinéad O’Connor’s first album comes on like a banshee wail across the bogs. Blending the uncompromising force of folk music, the sonic adventurousness of the Eighties and lyrics that draw on classical history, ghost tales and the Bible, The Lion and the Cobra is easily one of the most distinctive debut albums of the last year

It conveys a remarkable impression of crystal-clear, unbending purity. Sure, she strains her voice, she yelps and howls and sounds off-key fairly often (the outro in "Never Get Old"). Other times, her voice sounds beautiful, clear and strong. Either way, it is always an intense experience. The centerpiece of the album is "Troy," a long monologue from the point of view of a woman who was wronged by her irresponsible lover. The lyrics are in free verse, with no meter.

It seems Sinéad O’Connor was never quite geared for pop stardom. In an industry where most value job security over artistic freedom, the young Sister Bernadette seemed determined to dismantle her career before it had even started. That second album is generally regarded by critics as her finest effort (unusual, as critics tend to prefer the rawer, before she was famous -type albums), but the majority of Sinéad fans regard The Lion And The Cobra as her most distinguished product- emotionally honest; perfect by merely being imperfect.

Sinéad O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra, was a sensation upon its 1987 release, and it remains a distinctive record, finding a major talent striving to achieve her own voice.

On this day in music history: November 4, 1987 - The Lion And The Cobra, the debut album by Sinead O'Connor is released. Produced by Sinead O'Connor and Kevin Moloney, it is recorded at Oasis Studio in London from Late 1986 - Mid 1987. The first album by the then twenty year-old Irish singer and songwriter features musical support from Adam & The Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni and singer Enya. It spins off three singles including Mandinka, whose video receives heavy airplay on MTV, and I Want Your (Hands On Me) (duet with MC Lyte on the remixed version)
