Fourplay is a contemporary American smooth jazz quartet. The original members of the group were Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitars), Nathan East (bass), and Harvey Mason (drums). In 1997, Lee Ritenour left the group and Fourplay chose Larry Carlton as his replacement. In 2010, Larry Carlton left Fourplay and was replaced by Chuck Loeb, who died on July 31, 2017. During Loeb's illness, saxophonist Kirk Whalum joined the group for performances.
Fourplay is the debut album by the American smooth jazz group Fourplay which was released in 1991. The group was originally composed by Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitars), Nathan East (bass) and Harvey Mason (drums). The album want to number 1 on the Contemporary Jazz charts, number 16 on the R&B charts and number 91 (or 97) on the US Billboard 200. Since then the album went Gold according to the RIAA and has sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
Fourplay brought in Phil Collins to sing the lead vocal for their beautifully arranged version of ‘Why Can’t It Wait ‘Til Morning’. This song, originally written by Phil Collins, and was included in Fourplay’s third studio album, ‘Elixir’, with members Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitars), Nathan East (bass), Harvey Mason (drums).

For over 20 years, the collaborative ensemble Fourplay has grown ever more cohesive in its approach to modern jazz. Esprit de Four songs Fourplay had made fine records before, but the guitar chair always felt either under- or overutilized
Fourplay attempted to break new ground with 2002's Heartfelt, which was their debut album for RCA's Bluebird imprint. Fourplay - now featuring new guitarist Chuck Loeb replacing Carlton - assembled again for the label on 2010's Let's Touch the Sky, which included guest appearances by Ruben Studdard and Anita Baker. Two years later, they released Esprit de Four, with guest appearances by Kenny Mason & the Voices of Praise Choir, and Japanese singer Seiko Matsuda. In 2015, Fourplay celebrated their 25th anniversary with the release of the stylistically eclectic studio album Silver.
