Richter 858 is a 2005 studio album by American jazz guitarist Bill Frisell consisting of improvised music inspired by the paintings of German artist Gerhard Richter. The album features Frisell, Eyvind Kang, Jenny Scheinman and Hank Roberts.
Tony Reif of Songlines decided to rescue the recordings from obscurity, and re-released them in early 2005. The band is Frisell on guitar and delay, Eyvind Kang on viola, Jenny Scheinman on violin, and Frisell's old bandmate Hank Roberts on cello.
Commissioned by producer David Breskin, Bill Frisell used the paintings as stimuli for the eight compositions here. and maybe not to be repeated too often. Older fans will be gratified that Frisell still has his cutting edge when needed; he's as sharp as ever. Richter 858 slips seamlessly into the sequence; distinctly different and distinctively Frisell. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence.

Richter 858 is a commissioned work, setting guitarist Bill Frisell up with the job of creating music to accompany eight paintings for a book project on German painter Gerhard Richter. One of Richter's main techniques is to use a squeegee to smear paint over an aluminum surface. Frisell captures this sound-the squeak and squeal, the in the disc's opening, a sound that gives the initial impression that one is in for one of those "daunting" listening experiences.
