Dukes of Dixieland were featured on the first stereo record, released November 1957, on the Audio Fidelity label. Sidney Frey, founder and president of Audio Fidelity, had Westrex cut the disk for release before any of the major record labels. In 1978, the DUKES recorded the first Direct-to-Disk album, and then, in 1984, were the first jazz band to record on CD. In 1980, they recorded a television special at the old Civic Theater in New Orleans, with the New Orleans Pops Orchestra and later performed in a TV special with Woody Herman, Wood Choppers Ball

During his latter years, many criticized Louis Armstrong for falling into set patterns and putting more emphasis on entertaining than playing. His critics have since re-evaluated much of his final output and found that there was more substance in his solos and vocals than they had assumed. While there's certainly nothing new from a song standpoint, Armstrong and the group made hot, frequently dazzling, traditional jazz.

This collection contains both the master takes and all the alternates. Half of this music appears here on CD for the first time ever. These original LPs "The Definitive Album by Louis Armstrong" (1959) and "Louis and the Dukes of Dixieland" (1960) were among the first stereo recordings to fully capture Louis' magic sound
