Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album-Black Sabbath-is widely considered to be the first doom metal song.

Like Black Sabbath’s monolithic riff-fest, ‘The Shining,’ which arrived amidst a positively miserable career downturn for the heralded heavy metal godfathers, and, as a result, was sadly overlooked by many fans. Against all odds, though, the album yielded some of Iommi’s best and heaviest songs in years, and, in ‘The Shining,’ the hands-down greatest Black Sabbath’s tune not sung by Osbourne or Dio.

Black Sabbath's final studio album and nineteenth overall, 13 (2013), features all of the original members but Ward, who left the band prior to the recording sessions due to a contract dispute. A year after embarking on a farewell tour, the band played their final concert in their home city of Birmingham on 4 February 2017, after which they broke up. Iommi has stated that he has not ruled out the possibility of new material or one-off shows under the Black Sabbath name. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They have also won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance.
