Black Byrd is a 1973 album by Donald Byrd and the first of his Blue Note albums to be produced by Larry Mizell, assisted by his brother, former Motown producer Fonce. In the jazz funk idiom, it is among Blue Note Records' best selling album releases. The title of the album inspired the name of Byrd's apprentice group, The Blackbyrds. Donald Byrd - trumpet, flugelhorn, electric trumpet, vocals. Allen Curtis Barnes - flute, oboe, saxophone. Roger Glenn - saxophone, flute. Fonce Mizell - trumpet, vocals.

Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history

Blackjack (Donald Byrd album). Blackjack is an album by American trumpeter Donald Byrd featuring performances by Byrd with Sonny Red, Hank Mobley, Cedar Walton, Walter Booker, and Billy Higgins recorded in 1967 and released on the Blue Note label as BLP 4259. The CD reissue included one bonus track recorded in 1963.

Album · 1972 · 7 Songs. After releasing a pair of funky fusion albums on his own, former hard-bopping trumpeter Donald Byrd teamed up with Larry Mizell and his Motown hitmaker brother, Fonce, for one of the best groove-jazz albums of all time. Breezy and often quite beautiful, this radio-friendly 1973 release is full of wicked guitar riffing, buttery vocals, science-fiction synths, and, of course, first-class trumpet playing. Get down and dirty with "Slop Jar Blues" or croon along with the socially conscious "Where Are We Going?" Black Byrd Donald Byrd.

Trumpeter Donald Byrd had already played in combos led by Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and John Coltrane by the time he "went electric" in the early '70s. This album is his first with the Mizell brothers producing, a relationship that produced several of the best soul-jazz albums of all time. Melting down Byrd's hard-bop style into a more elastic, soul-soaked sound, Black Byrd took jazz into a funky, psychedelic new direction.

Donald Byrd's deeply rooted jazz background never stopped him from constantly pushing jazz forward, opening the minds of his listeners in the process. Produced by Larry Mizell in 1973, Black Byrd is filled with beautiful music that captures his passion for sound. The sophisticated, uptempo instrumentals are funky and danceable, but also extremely smooth. Byrd's impeccable trumpet meshes perfectly with the African-influenced beats and rhythms. Jazz purists may want to look into earlier Blue Note recordings such as Royal Flush and Byrd in Flight.
