Henry Levine and His Dixieland Octet offered traditional "readings" of jazz standards such as "Farewell Blues," "St. Louis Blues," and "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street. Trumpeter Levine (born Harry Lewis in London, England in 1907), a former member of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, was quite familiar with these arrangements  . Each show featured a "girl singer. Dinah Shore and then Lena Horne received recording contracts at RCA Victor records from their exposure on multiple Lower Basin Street appearances. Linda Keene replaced Horne in 1941.

Both Levine's "Barefooted Philharmonic" and Paul Laval's "Woodwindy Ten" offer excellent performances, with contributions by guest artist Benny Carter. Levine's band does "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" and really sells i. This CD is a real change of pace for big-band collectors and vintage-radio fans. It's great to see a second CD of the popular NBC Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street! Although done with some tongue in check concerning classic music, Henry Levine, Dinah Shore, and Benny Carter make this an album worth having. The music may be tightly arranged, but it's still an attempt to bring this good jazz to national public awareness.
